Personal history
Childhood
Vlad Konstantinov was born on Kor-Azor Prime in what was at that time a small city. Although eminently respectable, his family was not rich, and his father, Nikolaj, was one of the curiales of the city. The admirable virtues of Nikolaj's wife Ivana made her the ideal of religious mothers at the time.
Vlad Konstantinov received a religious education. His mother had him signed with the church. His association with "men of prayer" left three great ideas deeply engraven upon his soul: a Divine Providence, the future life with terrible sanctions, and, above all, the Divine Emperor. "From my tenderest infancy, I had in a manner sucked with my mother's milk that name of my Emperor; I kept it in the recesses of my heart; and all that presented itself to me without that Divine Name, though it might be elegant, well written, and even replete with truth, did not altogether carry me away" (Confessions, I, iv).
Youth
But a great intellectual and moral crisis stifled for a time all these religious sentiments. The heart was the first point of attack. Nikolaj, proud of his son's success in the schools determined to send him to prepare for a career in trade. But, unfortunately, it required several months to collect the necessary means, and Vlad had to spend his sixteenth year in an idleness which was fatal to his virtue; he gave himself up to pleasure with all the vehemence of an ardent nature.
At first he prayed, but without the sincere desire of being heard, and towards the end of the year, every circumstance tended to draw him from his true course: the many seductions of the great city that was half pagan, the licentiousness of other students, the theatres, and a proud desire always to be first, even in evil. Before long he was obliged to confess to Ivana that he had formed a sinful liaison with the person who bore him a son, "the son of his sin" — an entanglement from which he only delivered himself after fifteen years of its thralldom.
However, it may be said that, even in his fall, Vlad Konstantinov maintained a certain dignity and felt a compunction which does him honour, and that, from the age of nineteen, he had a genuine desire to break the chain. In fact, an entirely new inclination manifested itself in his life, brought about by reading the Emperor's "Pax Amarria".
Pod pilot career
Thenceforward Konstantinov looked upon mining, trade and business merely as a profession; his heart was in the defence of the Empire and the Amarrian way of life. A short time after his graduation he enlisted in the Imperial Star Guards under the command of Canoness Asuncion Ardishapur.
During his time in the Imperial Star Guards he developed a rash and direct behavior and showed a troublesome lack of self preservation. This led to several ship losses, but also to many battles that a more careful commander would have hesitated to enter. He quickly rose to the rank of Squadron Commander and eventually became a Director, before the return of the Order of St Tetrimon to the Empire forced him to take leave in order to retreat and meditate on the religious consequences of this.
Returning to pod pilot duty stronger than ever in faith and determination, Vlad Konstantinov decided to join The Silver Hand, a corporation he himself had helped finance, and devote his full attention to the interests of the Ardishapur Family.
Some months later, Konstantinov returned to active combat duty when he joined PIE Inc. After 18 months he had reached the rank of Commodore in that organisation, and has since been promoted to Vice Admiral.
