In Character Background

Like so many of his bretheren, saw the darkest of days when the Matari people were invaded the the cruel Amarrian empire. For most of his life, he has known nothing but war since his peaceful beginnings as a plantery archaeologist and explorer. His adventures have taken him from the heart of Republic Space, to its borders and beyond, from patrolling the galaxy's busiest spacelanes for slavers to the far fringes of the known galaxy fighting with others for a peice of the new frontier back towards the edge of 'civilised' space to the borders of republic space once more. Hakera has bore witness to some of the greatest and defining moments that have shaped the frontier, the empires and the future of things to come.

Like many born in these times, Hakera has mixed values, possessing the honour and duty of his fathers but whilst his parents and forefathers served and fought for the Republic without question, Hakera learnt to speak up, even out of place against the many elders, challenging their wisdom and choices or lack of, especially that of the Republic Parliament which he saw as the prime reason why so many were made to suffer. Frustrated and left without hope, Hakera yearned for the stars and to live amongst them once more, abandoning the rebellion (to many the rebellion continues to this very day and will not stop until all Matari are free although the empires are 'officially' at peace, a cold war persists and continues in the background beneath the smiles and poison of the politicians.

The Early Years

The Aru - Hakera's childhood home
The Aru - Hakera's childhood home

Born on a converted destroyer - The Ari, now the home of the remnants of Koros surived amongst the stars. A desire to explore has been in the Koros clan blood since the beginning. Hakera grew up in deep space, in his families mind far from the monsters who would come to take their children in the night. The colonies faced continued extensive raiding by slavers for 'new stock' and his father, Greyan sought safety in the deep of space.

His upbringing was one of two halves, his father's teachings of survival, piloting, navigation, combat and his mothers teaching of science, engineering and the arts. Together they risked all for their only child. Hopping from one fringe colony to another on the borders of republic space, no mans land or the deep fringe moving amongst his Thukker families space trading and searching for salvage and archeaological finds or curiosities.

In his teenage years, Hakera was already a skilled pilot and his coming of age was celebrated with his first ship, an old shamrock class fighter with modded cargo hold. The most common ship amongst the large convoys of nomadic Thukkers who wandered from trade hub to trade hub. The shamrock converts were used for escort and reconnaisance.

That life came to an end when the convoy came under attack by Angels, the convoy was scattered across a sector. Despite two years of searching, Hakera never found sign of his families ship, the home of his childhood. Low on fuel and isk, he made it to the border colonies in Molden Heath, there in his search for isk he signed up with Republic Fleet

Republic Fleet

To serve the new Republic...at the time, the queues of yound blood matari signing up for the fleet or army were huge. The majority of people were living in poverty and as soon as any son or daughter had come of age, they were sent of to find their fortune and send money back to support their clan. Hakera, was one of many orphans but as Hakera still believed, he was not orphaned and his family are out there amongst the stars still.

Badge of the Republic Fleet
Badge of the Republic Fleet

The Republic Fleet was in its infancy, recruitment involves quick scans for biological problems and mental capacity along with tests in simulators and trainers to have your recruitment choice given. For the majoirt, it was service on the ground and in stations or abord ships as infantry and marines. For Hakera, it was a pilot in the Republic Fleet. The new fleet and training was based on Gallente customns and at almost every stage, a Gallente would be seen overseeing the process somewhere around boot camp. Repubic Fleet at the time was struggling, its experienced pilots were getting old and dying. On all fronts the republics borders were being pressed harder by the cartels or by Amarrian and Nefantar raiders. Your life expectancy as a fresh pilot was not long.

Graduation through Republic Military school was more designed for rookies, fresh into space. Hakera having spent his life out there graduated at the top of his class winnning the top honours. It seemed even for a breif moment, some of the old ways of the matari were influencing this new alien system of fleet and army setup.

Life after that for Hakera was one of constant patrols, stationed first out in Molden Heath and the backwater constellations of Metropolis fighting under the Harkem wing, part of the Molden Heath Tigers. For eleven years he rose through the ranks promoted sometimes for good service and other for death of the commanding officer. His last command was leading the Harkems at the battle of Ennur. There his faith in the new republic was shattered as he was ordered to withdraw from the battle and allow the the trade station to fall. Ignoring the orders the Harkems fought for another two days running shadow manoeuvres striking at the Nefantar cruisers as

the colonies were being evacuated. The colonies and trade station fell but thousands were able to escape. As Hakera retreated, he was arrested and sentanced to death, saved only by the public outcry as news of the battle from the survivors was spread across the quadrant. Spared death but stripped of his rank and honours, he was dishonourably discharged and branded with the mark of dishonour to become once more a civilian. Nothing as henious as the pale eye. The shamens in this decade did not have enough power to quell the public support behind his cause.

Civi street

To be without honour, for a Matari, that would been ultimatly one thing. To be an outcast, no longer welcome in the graces of the tribe. The stories of their deeds erased and the burnt by the shamens who would call upon their faithful to chastice the honourless, forever condemned to find no peace in death, a Matari spirit without honour cannot enter the great halls in the hereafter and return to Matar's embrace.

For Hakera that meant a return to his childhood ways, life amongst the Thukkers. There he could move freely his name no longer known, but that suited him. Out here, the Thukker cared not for the talk of shamens but their own. For four years, life was hard and desperate as he scraped a living, going days without food or ability to refuel his ship, the life of a space pilot is ruled by his ship. Even refuelling from hydrogen gases, whilst extremely dangerous an dill advised was the usual method amongst the thukker.

Republic University

The next chapter in Hakera's journey would see him employed as escort and aide to an adventurous planetary archaeological team who sought to explore the ruins on Middon IV deep in the wildlands. During the expedition whilst planetside, Hakera became interested in the dig, the research and intruigment at seeing other matari doing something other than just surviving. Over the next four months he assisted where he could, this sector of space was only occasionally visited by Angels but scanning for the small party on the planet was impossible given the local terrain and geology.

After the Middon expedition, Hakera ventured around other colonies seeking treasure or some artefacts to find his fortune. Frustrated except for smaller findings which were on occasion bought by the University. He studied archeaology with particular interested in ancient civilisations that pre-dated the wormhole closure in New Eden. The Immensians, those nicknamed for having once dwelt in the Immensia region in the deep south-east, were amongst the mosttalked about after the recent finds of the smuggler gates and other wrecks and ruins scattered around the quadrant.

Pod licence

The years had passed and the Republic had grown, the emergence of pod pilots. The so called 'elite' was the new status quo in the empires. Considered the best pilots, but also the best minds, able to use Jovian technology to control major ship function with a mere thought hailed the new era and space age where a new class of people, shed of their former empire ties emerged from the night.

At the time, over three years ago when the pods became widely manufactured coupled with new advancements in cloning technology by the large multicorp Cromeaux helped solidfy the status of the pod pilots as elite, granted access by Concord accords to cloning technology and the potential immortality brought with it and for Hakera, a chance at regaininbg his lost honour.

Becoming one of the elite was much like the days of being recruited for the fleet, was one of tests, but unlike the last time. This one included tests of the mind. Ability to focus and concentrate, to harness the power within. Hakera was granted his pod pilot licence from the Republic Military School and so began his life as 'elite'.

IMTC

Independant Minmatar Trading Corporation [IMTC] was one of many corporations founded by the many new elite pilots to forge new destinies together. Based originally in Freatlidur, Metropolis region. The corp would operate in the less secure constellations of the area from Vorsk to Hagilur hunting Angels, Sansha, or the dreaded pod pilots who had turned to piracy which plagued the region. Working freelance on the many contracts offered by the Fleet and mining the ever in demand ore contained within the large asterioid belts which occupied much of the quadrant. From 105 till early 106, Hakera worked in the corporation building a life for the many. Isk started to flow into wallets and new technology was acquired. It did not take long till the end of 105 when IMTC moved out to the edge of the Curse constellation where many corps at the time full of elites headed to the new frontier to make their fortune in the dangerous depths of the fringe. Returning from the heaven constellation a week before an invasion began by the new Curse alliance. IMTC had a large change in leadership and alongside two others, Hakera found himself in charge of running the daily affairs of IMTC and shaping the destiny for the many under its banner.

The spring of 106 saw the end of IMTC has it joined forces with Syncore, a freindly corp who were long time allies and partners. But what a legacy the corp left. To be the third sole holder in possession of the famed Miner II production blueprint, the most advanced mining laser availible, a gift rewarded to one of its members of long service to the Republic. Hakera during this time became one of the very first pilots of the new stiletto class interceptor having acquired the bpo through a high tech research project he assisted with and was awarded rights to.

Liberty & U'K

"To serve Matar, its people and our freedom!"

Hakera had monitored galnet comms channels for many years. He witnessed the growing influence of the elite, of which many chose to champion a cause even though to many the elite had become unattached from the common person. All too often had Hakera seen many sucuumb to the power and quasi-immortallity came with being elite. Ordinary folk would look on in awe as if you were capable of some magic power. The more famous Matari could not walk down a street without being asked to bless or take children to raise themselves, or another woman offered as wife. Within the elite, people saw hope but also jealousy, for the elite, the power that came was like a drug to many who craved yet more of it.

For a few, their position and power gave responsibility. To use that power for the good of your people. To that end a small but increasing number of elite started to champion causes, one of which began as soon as the first pod pilots undocked from station was the rebellion and the fight for freedom of the Matari people. Whilst a pilot in the Republic Fleet, Hakera had witnessed a small group of freedom fighters battling other Amarrian pod pilots in the Metropolis hub system of Hek. An Amarrian group of slaver pilots called the Praetorian guard had raided the cluster for fresh slaves but were intercepted by the pod pilots of Oracle corp. From that moment Hakera followed every small news item and reports of battle, the addresses on galnet by each side as they battled for public opinion against the Republic itself which seemed as great an enemy to Matar as the Amarrians. In the months that followed, the rebellion and championing the fight for freedom amongst the elite grew, next came The Peoples Front of Matar into the spotlight whoch quickly formed a strategic alliance with Oracle.

Friends of Matar

Many smaller corps took up the cause quickly forming under the banner of the Friends of Matar [FOM] alliance, headed by Freelance Unincorporated & Northern Intelligence amongst others who spearheaded the brewing and bitter cold war between the elite for a cause not of their own. FoM was waging a war on four fronts, against the Amarrian slavers, Nefantar insurgents, Angels and the pirates who infected Molden Heath primarily Sneaky Magic. It was the raging battles of Molden Heath where SMAK Enterprises joined FoM greatly adding to the already heavily outnumbered members of FoM who were daily being pressed and tested on many fronts, from daily battles in the spacelanes against the likes of Pie Inc, Imperial Dreams and their lackeys like Blacksheep squadron the latter of whom quickly developed a reputation for bold attacks around Heimatar and Molden Heath.

Hakera had joined FoM after seeing IMTC merge with Syncore, under the banner of Liberty Inc, a legitimate organisation from the front which treated freed slaves and helped them back into a free life but secretly was a weapons manufacturing and coordination centre for many raids on Amarr territory using and developing a network of sympathisers to recieve and process intel on Amarrian shipping movements and the location of their slaver raider squads.

Weeks prior to Liberty Inc being formed, the two founding corps of pod pilots who started the fight departed from empire space seeking a new life on the frontier as part of the newly formed Curse Alliance. Their loss to the cause was a harsh blow for FoM who struggled having to fight on so many fronts against so many. But even in the darkest of times as the Matari were used to, the small group of elite never gave up.

Life as a freedom fighter, even one with perpetual immortality was harsh. Having to avoid Amarr or Nefantar assassins whilst carrying out attacks on slavers and pirates daily with no restbite. The days and raids were long and bloody with few able to return home without many ship losses. But every day, the reception centres would fill with newly freed people and that gave the members of FoM the strength to continue. Our strength lay in our ability to run and hide against the much bigger, better organised and equipped foes whilst luring them many a time into a well rehearsed ambush.

Amarrian slaver pod pilot confidence grew and their attacks and HK missions became more frequent and bolder. But like the old wars on Matar, a clansman warrior knew to never overextend your sword arm. You leave yourselve vunerable to attack from the flanks and rear. This weakness and the Amarrian confidence in their supperiorty ledd to many costly losses for them. The tables started to turn after the many months of struggle by the return of the original two who apologised for losing their way and wished to return to their rightful roots. Their return swung things for once in the favour of the freedom fighters and the first time in an age, the Amarrians were on a back foot. The freedom fighters used the opportunity to make constant daily raids on Amarrian space and continously harrass and press the Imperial navy and civilian convoys. The resettlement complexes swelled with freed people of the next half year as the Amarrians had been pushed back to their own space as the cold war raged amongst the spacelanes of the 'highway'.

Formation of the Ushra'Khan

It was to come that Concord assembly would sanction pod pilots in corps to band together as officially recognised alliances. From that point the Ushra'Khan was formed, their symbol, the bloody fist would come to strike fear into the Amarrians as united under the one banner the freedom fighters would press home and wage their cold war under the false blanket of peace put down by concord. For Hakera's small part he would be granted a seat on the council and came to once more direct and debate strategy and resources of the secretive Ushra'Khan.

For months things went relatively well, that was until Hakera came to realise he was a better pilot than a diplomat and leader. From his constant war on galnet comms channels broadcasting to the public and common about the Ushra'Khan role and increasing public support and sympathy which lead to dueling and a bitter war of words from the Amarrian pod pilots who would counter each reply or press release quickly.

Infighting and Foreign ideals of 'democracy'

Within the ranks of the council, infighting and bitterness was rife as the Gallente facets of democracy still were new to a Matari's normal structure of chieftain speaks and warriors do. Now it was to be debated and talked about for hours with many in the council holding firm to their beliefs and stance and refusing to commit their forces until they got their way. realising he was becoming the thing he most hated, Hakera left the Ushra'Khan having come to terms that their paths must divulge like all times that never can be forgotten. This was Hakera's greatest tribute to Matar, to fight alongside his brothers for freedom. He hoped it would be enough to see him accepted into Matar's embrass when death finally takes him.

Project Freedom

Completing his final project proposal, codenamed 'Freedom outpost' before leaving, a proposal for the Ushra'Khan to do a phased relocation to Providence to base close to Amarrian regions within Providence was submitted but rejected for being too bold as too many of the Ushra'Khan were commited to their grants from the Republic Fleet to bolster the Molden Heath defences. None did want to abandon Molden Heath so quickly.

Though another year would come to pass, the Ushra'Khan did eventually relocate to Providence and exceed all expectations by building an outpost there At this though their paths had long since parted, Hakera had always kept an eye on what was his greatest memories and achievements to be counted as one of the Ushra'Khan once, if only for a while.

Republic Fleet

For a time after leaving the Ushra'Khan Hakera became employed by Republic Fleet once more to carry out an operation. A favour for his friend, commander of the Tiat fleet he once more took command of a mission that would see him infilitrate and uncover a smuggling ring which was used to kindnap people and ship them to Nefantar space for sale on the black market. It was rumoured that that the slave ring were thrown inside the cells of the hidden slave compound having being drugged with their own vitox and then 'spaced'.

Ascendant Frontier

Ascendant Frontier, one of the familar names of the small alliances that had made their home on the fringe in the deep south. An increasing trend was for the elite to band together and forge a new destiny out on the fringe free from the chains of the laws of the empire. Another reason drew Hakera south, his new found time had allowed him to pick up and research the recent papers made on the ancient civilisations and he realised that in the deep south lay a potential uncovered wealth of sites and relics to be uncovered. To that end he signed up with one of the members of the Ascendant Fronteir corps, Eve Defence Force [EDF], a name he had recognised from his days in IMTC as a fellow corp which operated around Freatlidur in Metropolis at the same time IMTC did.

After signing up he was sent north first as at the time ASCN were attacking the northern alliances of 'G' and Iron. There he saw daily action, most of it was ambushes, waiting for unsuspecting travllers to jump into the system and then be destroyed before they could do anything. In the land of the lawless, the ones with the bigger mob would prevail. There was no moraility out here but nature itself, kill or be killed.

Soon after he arrived in their home space of feythabolis and began setting up operations there. When able he would scout out amongst the many systems and plantery bodies looking for the familiar signs of settlement and ancient battles, the ancient smuggler gates were amongst his first interest originally discovered and used by the pirate cartels, these were now used by the general public to move around, a much greater range than the standard empire gates, these were built by no pirate and dating on the structures show they predated gate design by the empires.

For almost a year he participated in operations of a 0.0 alliance intent on building an empire for itself getting greedy and rich on the bountiful plate of fringe space and its untapped resources. Whilst still finding it easy to slip away and continue his resesarch, he spent three weeks in one system and what was found there caused him to return to the empire

Freelance

Hakera has now return to his roots and whilst carrying out the odd mission for Republic Fleet continues to digest his findings at a laboratory nearby with his old prorfessor once more.
