GoonSwarm is currently the largest alliance in EVE; its executor corporation, GoonFleet, is also the single largest corporation. GoonSwarm controls the region of Scalding Pass, substantial areas of Tenerifis and Detorid, and recently, Delve.

Their founder and long-time leader, Remedial, eventually left the alliance to protest this policy, absconding with nearly six months worth of rent that Goons had raised through donation drives.[citation needed] He is suggested to have left a final message for his alliance, stating that "GoonFleet's libertarian ideals should not be trampled under the feet of Russian imperialism,"[citation needed] adding that "They're just a bunch of logoffskis anyhow."[citation needed] Through concerted effort, it is believed, this message was suppressed by GoonSwarm directors Blitter and Deadtear and remains unknown to the vast majority of the membership.[citation needed]

Accused of using exploits[citation needed] and unfair meta gaming[citation needed] in their drive to conquer regions of 0.0 space, Goons have become to be known as the "the Garbages of Eve".[citation needed] The skills of the Goons are in question,[citation needed] and it is highly believed that they possess little PVP tactics,[citation needed] instead their advantage is the use of overwhelming numbers. One of their many recruitment drives advertise the importance of just one pilot flying a rookie ship with a warp scrambler attached.[citation needed] Indeed, some have said that although a few of their members possess capital ships, GoonSwarm continue to use the same tactics as with their small ship fleets. However, their possible success without the support of RA and the rest of the southern coalition, remains to be seen.[citation needed]

GoonSwarm is commonly misspelled as "Goonswarm", which, incidentally, was one of only two protected pages (out of 466 total) on the EVE History wiki at the time of this writing; the other being Women Gamers of EVE.

History

The Syndicate Wars

In the summer of 2006, the corporation known as GoonFleet and it's associates left The OSS and founded their own Alliance, the present day GoonSwarm. The newly made Alliance wasted no time in attempting to sieze more territories, setting their sights on the Cloud Ring system of XZH-4X to the north in late June 2006. After their long and hard first war with the system holders, Dusk and Dawn, GoonSwarm eventually lost and retreated back into Syndicate.

Band of Brothers, GoonSwarm's long-standing rivals, met GoonSwarm for the first time in early August 2006. Barely giving the Alliance time to recover from it's previous war, BoB and the Mercenary Coalition declared war on GoonSwarm and attacked Syndicate for what was approximately two and a half weeks. GoonSwarm, having been forced into the constellation JQV, decided to use the first example of their renowned zerg tactics. Presumably using newbie players from their home forum, GoonSwarm constructed a fleet of characters each named 'VCBee' followed by a space and then a random three-digit number. GoonSwarm used these easily replaceable characters in Guerilla Warfare against Band of Brothers in both 0.0 space and Empire space. In defiance, GoonSwarm also declared war on a whole group of other Alliances, the most notable being the famed IRON and RAZOR Alliances.

Band of Brothers gave up against the hundreds of GoonSwarm rookies, and left the region promptly. With BoB out of the way, GoonSwarm successfully removed the Black Reign Syndicate from the lower area of Syndicate in a short campaign, before abandoning the region forever.

The RedSwarm Federation

After leaving Syndicate behind, GoonSwarm travelled towards south-east and forged a friendship with the Red Alliance. This time around, GoonSwarm managed to obtain several new territories (Scalding Pass, Tenerifis, Wicked Creek, Omist, and Detorid) - All of them from the Southern Coalition power bloc, which then consisted of Lotka Volterra, Veritas Immortalis and the Knights Of The Southerncross. GoonSwarm, the Red Alliance, and the Tau Ceti Federation forged their own power bloc, commonley referred to as the RedSwarm Federation, and a feud between the two blocs raged.

One of the largest battles in EVE involved GoonSwarm, where a combined fleet of their and red Alliance's ships destroyed fifteen dreadnoughts and one carrier working for Lotka Volterra at Planet 2 Moon 1 of system DG-8VJ, which were fighting against a GoonSwarm POS tower. Two weeks later, the Tau Ceti Federation initiated a strike against a Planet 4 Moon 1 POS of the system JV1V in Tenerifis, which housed a capital shipyard containing a Titan that was still in production. After many attacks and counter-attacks against this capital shipyard, with the final attack taking over seven hours, a thousand pilots and more than ten node crashes, Red Alliance, Tau Ceti Federation and GoonSwarm jumped their whole dreadnought force into the system and destroyed the tower, preventing the Titan from ever being completed.
